News & Events

2024 Annual Dinner

The event will be held on Thursday 17th October 2024 at the Honourable Artillery Company, Armoury House, City Road, EC1Y 2BQ.

The event will be black tie with proceedings commencing at 18.00 with drinks in the Sutling Room. The ticket price is £115 (not including wine) and the format will be similar to prior years, an evening of entertainment, good food and great wine, and an opportunity to exchange stories of “The One that got away…". We are very pleased to say that the speaker for our dinner this year is Jim Murray with whom many of you will be familiar:

Jim Murray is a talented actor and passionate angler. Best known for his television roles, including Stephen Hart in Primeval and Prince Andrew in The Crown, Jim has also successfully transferred his love of angling onto the screen, through his TV partnership with Robson Green in their Fly Fishing Adventures series. Jim works with a number of environmental organisations to highlight issues around pollution and the plight of the Atlantic Salmon. He is married to the actress Sarah Parish who will also be attending the dinner and taking part. Jim selected charity is the Murray Parish Trust – their organisation built to support the mental health of seriously ill children and their families. A portion of the proceeds from the auction/raffle will be donated to Fish Legal.

In a departure from previous years, wine is not included in the ticket price – please order your requirements for wine for the evening at the time of booking your ticket(s) which will be debited along with ticket purchases. The selection will be visible on the booking form after you have confirmed your ticket purchase. You will be able to add to your order but not remove previously ordered wines.

2024 Fishing

There are a few changes to the programme which continues with most of our favourites as well as a new fishery
Avon Northend - Probably the cheapest salmon fishing to be found. Early season the fishing can be along traditional lines due to absence of weed whilst later on the tactics include the induced take using nymphs. 2021 & 2022 saw several good salmon landed up to 20lbs.
Avon Old Sarum - This is a lovely wild fishery just north of Salisbury. It presents a generous and enticing variety of trout water - covering a total of nearly 1500 metres including a bridge pool, mill leat, gravel runs, deep glides, shallows, weir cascade, weir pool and scour, and carrier.
Avon Woodford Valley (Salterton) - The fishery is looking very good with stocked and wild fish flourishing as well as chub, dace, roach and grayling who will all rise to the fly.
River Dun, Hungerford - This little gem is part of the world-famous Hungerford Town and Manor fishery, gifted to the townsfolk by John of Gaunt. The Hungerford Marsh beat extends for approximately 950 metres of the River Dun (which is a major tributary of the River Kennet). Despite being only a short walk from the town this is a very private and intimate section of river with its own fishing hut. It is crystal clear, creepy crawly fishing where stealth will be the key.
Itchen Abbas - Probably our most popular beat fished well all season.
Itchen, Easton Carrier - An exceptionally rare stretch of gin-clear chalk stream perfect for 'sight fishing', catch & release. 1 rod with a guest rod; it is best to use a rod of around 8ft in the 3-weight range with dry fly or nymph, the latter allowed all season provided they are traditional chalk-stream patterns. This stream is stocked and has a healthy head of wild fish too.
Itchen, Fulling Mill - New last season this 2 rod beat offers a charming and sparsely fished stretch of the Itchen between Abbots Worthy and Kings Worthy. We are very fortunate to be able to take fishing here on water that has traditionally been the preserve of a small number of private anglers.
Itchen, Lower Itchen - Again new last season, two rods on 4 trout beats with different qualities giving a good variety with white water pools, faster riffled stretches and deep pools, providing excellent sport. Regular stocking is carried out using only the highest quality brown trout ranging up to 5lbs.
Kennet, Avington/Denford Fishery - One of our most prolific fisheries we have both Denford comprising mainly carrier fishing as well as access to the famous Avington syndicate water which is both main river and productive carriers. You can literally loose yourself on the myriad of Denford streams on the walk down to Avington. We are very privileged to have access to this water not being syndicate members and we would implore fishers to keep a low profile, preferably not using the fishing hut.
Loddon, Stratfield Saye - We are fortunate to be able to return to this excellent fishery on the Duke of Wellington's estate. The Loddon (a tributary of the Thames) has an indigenous head of coarse fish (not grayling) and wild brown trout and the fishery stocks with both rainbow and brown trout. Due to our past misdeeds, all fishermen should know that we lost this fishing 6 years ago due to a variety of rules breaches. We don't want to lose this privilege again. The Loddon was particularly popular in 2023 and we have been able to increase our number of days for 2024.
Test, Broadlands - A NEW FISHERY for LFS; part of the famous Mountbatten property at Romsey. Around four miles of the Test running through the Broadlands Estate just south of Romsey. Renowned for the native brown trout, Atlantic salmon, sea trout and grayling, the private beats on the Estate are much sought after. We have 5 beats from just south of the house down to the M27 above Nursling all stocked with brown trout from the Houghton Club.
Test, Chilbolton Meads. This fishery was 100% booked in 2023 and remains at the top on catch returns. It is not cheap being Upper test, crystal clear and well stocked with prime trout.
Test, Houghton Lodge - This fishery continues a great success. The Lower beat has been responsible for the biggest fish of the season from Society waters in every year. Seth, the River Keeper, is usually about to give a hand in his relaxed, no-nonsense manner and certainly helped several members to score. Those on the WhatsApp group will have enjoyed Seth's many videos on and about the river in recent years not least on the substantial bank and riverbed works conducted last winter with the introduction of many hundreds of tons of gravel. The Upper beat is more challenging and offers some of the best priced prime Test fishing available. Unfortunately, the estate has retained one of our days on the Upper beat so reducing our rod days by a third and on the Lower beat the estate has now retained all the fishing UPSTREAM OF the swing gate by the hut (this includes all gardens, landing stage up to the incoming stream) so making it henceforth a 2 rod beat.
Test, Leckford - Owned by the Waitrose Partnership, this famed estate has 16 beats over 11 miles with a huge variety of fishing. This is high quality fishing, stocked with quality fish.
Test, Mottisfont - This much-loved prime beat continues to be a regular producer of big fish.
Test, Park Stream Bossington - The Park Stream is the mill stream to the historic Horsebridge Mill. This popular beat flows from the famous Houghton Club water on the river Test and was purchased from the Club by Bossington Estate. Double bank of over 300 yards with both trout and a good head of grayling. Fishing for 1 or 2 friends fishing together. This fishery is managed by the Pifflers and we have taken more days.
Test, Testwood - This is a unique seatrout fishery, fished from 10pm through to 3am being the most productive seatrout pool in England. It is difficult fishing in the pitch dark but produces big seatrout consistently - the fishery is reliant on catch and release which will not unduly concern LFS members who for the main part practise this already. There is accommodation and breakfast available.
Full details in the Fisheries section of our website.
Grayling - The grayling fishing was a big success in recent years and we will organise again for 2024. We also include a fishery grading chart on the website to guide members, especially beginners, towards the most appropriate fishing. It provides a grading by difficulty, wading as well as some information on the respective fisheries.
The Mayfly restriction this year will be one booking between 15th May and 15th June. This restriction lasts until 2 weeks after booking start date to ensure everyone has a chance of booking a mayfly day.
Finally, there will be some minor amendments to some fishery information sheets and so please do always check prior to your visit. It is vital that we adhere to the rules of each fishery; trout fishing is ever more popular and fisheries do have a queue of people ready to take our beats! As ever, do remember that we run the fishing to break even and as such the prices are close to cost; if you should buy days directly or through agencies you will find them considerably more expensive. There is something for everyone here and we urge you to start planning early.
Tight lines!
